This article explains how to get started with the Beier USM-RC-2 sound and light system.
The unit comes without a speaker but with two speaker cables (it has two 20 watt amplifiers). you will have to purchase a suitable speaker(s) and attach to the speaker cable. You may also want to purchase a volume control and extra m-m servo leads (2). You will also need LEDs with suitable resistors and perhaps some hookup wire (24-26 guage is good but it can be a little larger).
The unit is supplied with a blank micro-sd card which you will have to format to FAT32 on your PC or equivalent (a windows emulator on another platform). Next you need to install the sound teacher and other applications from the supplied DVD - it is a standard install process so should not be too hard. The manual is available from the help drop down menu and it will be in the language you chose on install.  If you have the wrong language then choose the correct one from the third drop down menu from the left.
The install process adds a number of starter projects to your disk, use sound teacher to open one up. Then save it to the sd card. All ready to go. Well maybe not well maybe not as you don't know where anything should be - so from the file menu choose Print Function Assignments to print all the necessary positions. Still not quite ready as you will need to set up you transmitter for 50 and 100% throw operations - we have other articles that cover that.

The Beier Sound and Light Module is a highly configurable module that is, in my opinion, the best there is. I use them now as a matter of course. Here are a couple of few and tricks that I have learned.


There are two ways to do your lights and which I guess depends on how many different lights you plan to run they mount up quickly.
So you can switch them all individually , side lights, mains, fogs left and right indicators OR you can use combined outputs for some of them. Combined lights have 3 settings for front lights it is side lights, headlights and main beam. These are adjusted by intensities in the 3 boxes you get when you choose combined. I use 10,40 and 50 and that seems OK (but you can use your own settings but they should total 100). You still have to have the same number of triggers on a channels so that is 3. Of course fog lights are extra.

You can similarly run combined rear lights so side lights brake lights and rear fog lights I guess it can work with again 10, 40 and 50 but it seems a little odd, again you can set your own values, I use this on my F350.

Don't forget that this still leaves you with indicators and reversing lights to hook up, but you have some more spares. Reversing lights and brakes are triggered by the egine settings and cannot be selected separately!

With the latest version of software you can now cycle through the side, head, full beam using a single selector but not sure how this works yet!


With the Beier Module when you play a sound you can also activate an output or start a sequence. The output activation is useful for e.g. military machines with guns mounted and can be used to provide muzzle flash connected with the firing sound.

Sequences can achieve a huge amount and are relatively simple to do, there are two types in the configuration tab, servo sequences and output sequences. I wont go through it all just enough so you get the idea.

I have an output sequence rigged so that when the "chirp" sound is played as an additional sound ( Its a double chirp) then it runs an output sequence (tick the output sequence box far right on the action line on the additional sounds page. My sequence turns on outputs 9 and 10 for 0.05 seconds then off for 0.1 seconds and on again for 0.1 seconds. Thats four steps but to ensure it does not re-trigger you have to have the sequence over run the sound so I have a further 3 second off step in there to do that.Outputs 9 and 10 on my set up are the left and right indicators.

You can adjust the start time of the sound by moving the "dead" band timing. Configuration>Engine Sound and / or the Hysterisis settings.

The gearbox sound is not available from Beier, I took my scania with Turbo sound from a video on Youtube. The downloader is on the disk. Save the track as an MP3 and then load it into Audacity (on the disk). Chop the gear change sound down and then save it for use ( Export as WMV and at 44100 sample rate). Then in the Engine sounds tab load it in.

To get gear changes - back on the config engine sound tab is a number of gears box - works up to 5. You can set the RPM and speed change point by dragging the blue boxes to where you want. So e.g. First can be very high RPM, second lower etc. You need to load the gear change sound in all the slots you use and also the "running engine sound" as they can all be different.

Well this is one thing that the BEIER module can do really really well and there are a few alternatives but some need real thinking about. First under the config activate one of the servos. Servos can have up to 4 positions plus a home position. I set Home and pos 1 to be the same at the lowest output now set the other two positions as centre and highest op. NB these will have to be checked to ensure it all works as expected but can be adjusted. Now you set 3 of your actions up as servo(x) pos 1, pos 2 and pos 3 on your TX. hopefully these are gears 1,2,3! To change gear you just activate that choice (NB it cannot be momentary - well it could but that kind of removes the advantages).

Now to be very tricky you can set it up as a sequential gearbox ;). In the config activate the servo sequence for the servo as stated above but do not put any sequence in. Now set one of your actions to servo sequence. Rather than running through the "missing" sequence - this will cause the servo to step through the positions in the servo set up. NB this is not supposed to happen but it does and may just disappear with the next release of firmware.
